Topdara Stupa

Parwan

Above the orchards and fields near Charikar in Parwan province, Topdara Stupa stands against a backdrop of rugged mountains. Its great stone dome is a striking reminder of Afghanistan’s Buddhist past and the largest surviving standing stupa in the country. Within reach of Kabul, Topdara brings together ancient architecture and the rhythms of the surrounding countryside. The approach is part of its charm: village roads, green cultivated land and glimpses of the monument rising above the valley.

History & Details

Topdara belonged to a network of Buddhist religious sites that once flourished around Kabul and ancient Kapisa, near present-day Begram. This region connected India, Iran and Central Asia, bringing together travellers, merchants and religious communities.

The stupa’s precise construction date remains uncertain, though it is generally associated with the early centuries of the first millennium CE. Its monumental dome, decorative arches and niches reflect the importance of the site as a place of Buddhist devotion. Religious images once adorned the structure, while a ceremonial stairway led to its raised platform.

The explorer Charles Masson documented Topdara in 1833. After a long period of deterioration, conservation work initiated in 2016 by the Afghan Cultural Heritage Consulting Organisation helped stabilise the structure. Archaeological excavation also revealed more of its base and stairway, deepening our understanding of the complex.

“Visiting Topdara offers time to appreciate both the monument and its setting. From a distance, the dome commands the hillside; closer up, individual layers of masonry and surviving decorative details reveal the skill of its builders. The views across the cultivated valley place this ancient religious site within a living landscape. For photographers, the contrast between stone, mountain slopes and green orchards offers possibilities for broad views and intimate architectural details.
