The Kite Runners of Maranjan Hill

Kabul

High above Kabul, where the city unfolds beneath the surrounding mountains, Maranjan Hill offers a glimpse of Afghanistan that no monument can quite capture. In the open space of the hill, Kabulis come to escape the noise of the city, gather with friends, drink tea and watch the changing sky. When the wind is right, colourful kites rise above the rooftops — turning Maranjan Hill into one of Kabul’s most joyful and atmospheric places.

History & Details

Maranjan Hill carries layers of Kabul’s history within a single landscape. Once home to a Buddhist sanctuary dating back to the Kushan period, the hill later became a royal resting place. King Nadir Shah and his son, King Zahir Shah, are buried here, alongside members of the royal family.

Today, the hill belongs to the people of Kabul. Families and young people come here to escape the bustle below, drink tea, play cricket and enjoy the view. And when the wind rises, kites fill the sky — a simple, joyful tradition continuing above a place that has witnessed centuries of Kabul’s history.

Visitor Experience

“Come to Maranjan Hill in the late afternoon, when Kabul’s residents begin to gather and the light softens over the city. Watch children and young men launch their kites into the wind, follow their movements across the sky and listen to the sounds of everyday life around you. Perhaps join the locals for a cup of tea, watch a game of cricket or simply sit and take in the panorama of Kabul. There is no monument to tick off here, and no fixed itinerary to follow. The experience is simply to be present — to watch Kabul live, breathe and play beneath you. And if the wind is favourable, you may find yourself looking up at a sky filled with kites, understanding for a moment why some of Afghanistan’s most memorable stories begin with a kite.”
