Rising from a remote valley in the mountains of Ghor, the Minaret of Jam is one of Afghanistan's most remarkable architectural treasures. Standing 65 metres high beside the Hari Rud, its slender form and intricate brick decoration seem almost impossibly delicate against the vast surrounding landscape.
History & Details
Built in 1194 during the height of the Ghurid dynasty, the minaret is believed to stand near the site of Firuzkuh, one of the dynasty's great centres of power. Its surface is covered with intricate geometric patterns and a turquoise Kufic inscription, reflecting the extraordinary artistic achievements of the period. The remains scattered through the surrounding valley offer tantalising traces of the city and civilization that once flourished here.

As the road follows the river through an increasingly remote landscape, the minaret eventually appears between the mountains, rising unexpectedly from the valley floor. Standing beneath it, surrounded by silence and the remains of a vanished world, gives a sense of scale and isolation that photographs can hardly convey. It is one of those places where the journey, the landscape, and the monument become inseparable.”
