Afghanistan's landscape ranges from scorching desert lowlands to some of the highest mountain passes in the world — which means timing your visit correctly matters more here than in most destinations.
Spring (April–May)
A beautiful time to visit lower-altitude regions like Kabul and Herat, with mild temperatures and green landscapes. Mountain passes may still be snow-affected, limiting access to the Wakhan Corridor and Ghor.
Summer (June–August)
The ideal window for high-altitude regions — Bamyan, Band-e Amir, and the Wakhan Corridor are all fully accessible, with clear skies and comfortable daytime temperatures. Lowland cities like Kandahar and Jalalabad can be very hot during this period.
Autumn (September–October)
Widely considered the best all-around season. Harvest season brings incredible produce and pomegranates, mountain routes remain open, and temperatures are comfortable nearly everywhere.
Winter (November–March)
Many mountain regions become inaccessible due to snow, and travel is generally limited to Kabul, Kandahar, and other lower-altitude cities. Not recommended for first-time visitors, but of interest to travelers specifically seeking a winter perspective on the country.
Our Recommendation
For most travelers, particularly those wanting to reach Bamyan, Band-e Amir, or the Wakhan Corridor, May through October offers the best combination of accessibility and comfortable travel conditions.
